Urban League hosts ‘golden’ fundraising event

The Chicago Urban League hosted its 48th annual Golden Fellowship Dinner on Saturday at the Hilton hotel downtown. The annual fundraiser drew hundreds to the hotel’s International Ballroom.

The Chicago Urban League hosted its 48th annual Golden Fellowship Dinner on Saturday at the Hilton hotel downtown. The annual fundraiser drew hundreds to the hotel’s International Ballroom.

The event, with the theme Take it to the nextLevel, included awarding the organization’s Edwin C. “Bill” Berry civil rights award to Hank R. Schwab.

Schwab is credited with dedicating his life and career to fighting for civil rights and forging venerable relationships between the Black and Jewish communities. Schwab participated in the March on Washington and the Chicago Freedom Movement. The WW II veteran was introduced to the Chicago Urban League in the ’50s by its then-Exec. Director Edwin Berry.

Schwab went on to become a fixture in the organization, serving as a board member and helping to create the Golden Fellowship Dinner event.

Saturday night’s event was emceed by veteran broadcast journalist Ed Gordon, and 10-time Grammy Award winning George Benson was the featured performer.
