CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Police from the University of Illinois and the city of Champaign are stepping up campus patrols after a series of weekend fires. In an e-mail to faculty and staff, University Police Chief Barbara O’Connor said the fires were reported between 5:09 and 5:32 a.m. Sunday. One fire burned the roof of a third-floor apartment, two were set in trash bins and two others were set in piles of brush stacked against buildings. No one was injured, and no one has been arrested. O’Connor called the fires a risk to students and employees. School isn’t in session yet, but many students are already back in town. Fall classes start Aug. 24. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
