The University of Illinois’s new Mile Square Health Center is officially opened! Tuesday, Jan. 21, a ribbing cutting ceremony took place at the five-story, 122,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility. The new facility is the first federally qualified health center in the Chicago area to offer urgent care and specialty care, including mammography services.
“The newest Mile Square Health Center at the corner of Wood Street and Roosevelt Road is not your typical community health center,” says Dr. Kameron Matthews, chief medical officer of the Mile Square Health Centers. “By providing a broad array of specialty medical services as well as urgent care and primary care, Mile Square will be a complete one-stop-shop for patients in our community looking for high-quality health care. We expect that there will be many more people seeking health services who have become newly insured under the Affordable Care Act, and Mile Square is ready to welcome those patients as well as anyone seeking health services, regardless of income.”
The new building was funded in part by a $12 million competitive grant awarded to UIC for Mile Square  for the construction of new federally qualified health centers under the Affordable Care Act. The facility was designed by Moody-Nolan Architects, the largest African-American architectural firm in the U.S.
