Chicago International Puppet Theatre Festival The Chicago International Puppet Theatre Festival, debuting January 16-25, 2015, will celebrate the full breadth of the art of contemporary puppetry with an international pageant of top puppet and puppet artists from Chicago, the U.S. and around the world. Performing Artist: In the Heart of the Beast Theatre In the Heart of the Beast Theatre has been at the vangaurd of theater melding performance with the rich history of puppetry from its shamanistic roots and lively street theater traditions to the imaginative performance language found in experimental theater circles. Rooted in an aspect of ceremony and celebration, whether it be narrative, episodic, or the award winning annual MayDay Parade and Festival HOBT invites audiences to a theater of wonder that gives voice to under-represented communities and prespectives and draws together diverse communities to address local and global issues and celebrate our shared humanity. Festival Schedule Fairytales and Folklore from the Days of Yore Ages 8-12 / 12-1pm Room 701 Capacity: 20 Does your child love to imagine their life as a fairytale? Living in a castle and dancing the night away – or perhaps as a knight gallivanting through forests looking for dragons to slay? In this workshop young actors will use theatre play and inmprov games to explore stories and traditions passed down through the ages and learn the actor’s tools: body, voice and imagination. Family Folks and Songs Ages 2-5 / 12-1pm Room 603 Capacity: 20 Join the legendary Mama Zahra for call and response rhythms and songs featuring singing, instrument playing, movement, and dance. Puppet Zoo Appropriate for all ages / 1-2pm Gidwidtz Lobby and 2nd Floor Mezzanine This event will include over 10 companies with puppets (and their handlers) so that parents (and their children) can meet (but not feed) them. Film: Monkey King at Spider Cave, presented by Southside Projections Ages 6+ / 2-3pm Film Screening Room (201) Capacity: 120 Monkey King at Spider Cave, inspired by an episode from the beloved 16th-century Chinese epicJourney to the West, unfolds the adventures of a Buddhist High Priest and his animal diciples as they bring the Buddhist scriptures to China. Their journey is relentlessly endangered by mythical demons and monsters – this time by demonic spiders and an evil alchemist. Journey to the West is the frequent subject of operas and cartoons through Asia. The most famous and beloved of characters from the epic is Sun Wu Kong, “The Monkey King,” famous for his cunning, but with a playfulness and childishness that hides great wisdom. In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre Ages 6+ / 2-3pm Theater West Capacity: 105 Directed by Steve Acherman and Ellen Conn, In the Heart of the Beast is a live-action three-dimensional cartoon performed by a cast of fifteen. Jerry-rigged puppet effects, a pit “orchestra,” a mad conductor, and a narrator who’s in on the joke work in perfect harmony to bring this Tex Avery tweaking masterpiece to life. You’ll be glued to your seat from the first chainsaw-weilding chase scene to the anvil-dropping finale. Includes people running into brick walls, falling pianos, and an entire scene of dynamite. Bag Puppet Workshop with Marc Nichols from the Puppet Place Ages 3-6 / 3-4pm Room 802 Capacity: 20 The paper bag puppet making workshop will introduce children to the art of creating lovable characters as workign hand puppets. In the Heart of the Beast Puppet Workshop Ages 6 and up / 3:30-4:40pm Room 901 Capacity: 30 Artists from In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre will teach workshop participants to create and animate miniature puppet cartoons inside cereal boxes. The New Speak Open Mic with Rebirth Poetry Ensemble Ages 14+ / 4:30-6pm Room 201 Capacity 129 Come to perform or enjoy as Rebirth Poetry Ensemble hosts a spoken word event for teens at the Logan Center. This afternoon poetry event will include both featured performers and an open mic for youth voices. Tickets: $5 single tickets, $20 families of 5+ Check-In at the UChicago Arts Box Office to receive your Festival Wrist Band which grants entry to all performances and workshops. |
