UAW-Ford will host a Community Empowerment Day, benefitting Chicago’s low-income senior citizens on Thurs., Sept. 22 from 8:30 to 11 a.m.
In partnership with the local non-profit, Housing Opportunities and Maintenance for the Elderly (H.O.M.E.), dozens of UAW-Ford members will assist with facility upgrades by painting the hallways and meeting rooms at Nathalie Salmon House, an intergenerational home focused on providing independent living for seniors, located at 7320 Sheridan in Chicago.
“The community service that UAW-Ford is providing is an expense we just couldn’t afford right now,” said Bruce Otto, executive director of H.O.M.E. “Their efforts will help us save $10,000, which will afford us the opportunity to use those funds for other needed projects. We are very appreciative of the organization’s generosity and community outreach.”
The community service efforts will benefit nearly 60 seniors and 25 younger adults and families and is a part of UAW-Ford’s outreach mission.
“UAW-Ford is committed to helping those in need in the communities where our members work and live, as well as those in the communities in which we travel,” said Jimmy Settles, UAW-Ford vice president. “We are especially proud to help serve our senior citizens who have contributed to society, now we are at their service.”
The initiative is a huge cost-saver for H.O.M.E. UAW-Ford will donate the materials and volunteers needed to help paint the facility, saving the organization $10,000 in painting fees.
“Giving back is important to us at Ford Motor Company – we are committed to helping build strong communities and better lives,” said Bill Dirksen, vice president of labor relations at Ford Motor Company. “In this case, we are proud to support the senior citizens who have contributed greatly to our country. This is just one way we can show our immense gratitude.”
