U of Ill. president to face clout panel scrutiny

URBANA, Ill.  — Former University of Illinois president James Stukel places much of the blame for the school’s admissions troubles on trustees who he says are beholden only to the governor who appoints them. On Monday, Stukel told the commission examining the influence of political power on admissions that trustees are running the university rather than setting policy and picking good people to implement it. He says that could see the university relegated to second-class status. Current university president B. Joseph White is expected to testify before the commission later Monday. White has said admissions officials shouldn’t be pressured to admit students. News reports and documents released by the university show that’s what has happened the past few years. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
