URBANA, Ill. — The University of Illinois will spend $4.21 million to decommission a small nuclear reactor on its Urbana-Champaign campus. University trustees agreed this week to spend the money to shut down and remove the reactor. The university used the 1.5-megawatt reactor for research by students of physics, engineering and other disciplines. The reactor was built in 1960 but hasn’t been used since 1998. University officials say the reactor’s fuel was shipped to a facility in Idaho in 2004. The university will now remove the remainder of the facility. That includes the 5,000 square-foot building that houses the reactor. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
