An Orr High School student looking forward to starting his sophomore year was gunned down Sunday morning. Sixteen-year-old Derrick Harris was on his way home from a friend’s house at about 12:45 a.m. when he was fatally shot and left for dead in the alley of the 1100 block of North Harding Avenue, less than a block from his home, said Chicago Police News Affairs officer Kevin Kilmer. He was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to the buttocks but died nearly two hours later. Details about the shooting are unclear, but police said Harris may have been the victim of mistaken identity. The next morning in the 3300 block of West Monroe Street, Darnell Stamps, 26, was found fatally shot in the alley. Minutes before 4 a.m., police responded to a “shots fired” call and found Stamps fatally shot in the back, police said. No arrests have been made in either incident. ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
