Last season, Tuskegee finished off a perfect 11-0 season with a 58-51 victory over Virginia Union. They were named the Black college football national champions.
Picked second in the poll was Albany State while Fort Valley State was third, Morehouse fourth, and Stallman fifth.
Tuskegee also received national recognition. The Sporting News ranks them 23rd in the USA Today small college poll and sixth.
Tuskegee, which features returning stars in quarterback Jacary Atkinson, wide receiver Jason English and defensive lineman Jarvis DeVaughn will open the season Sept. 6 against Miles.
Atkinson, the 2007 Alabama Sports Writers Association Small College Player of the Year last season, threw for a school-record 2,979 yards and 34 touchdowns. He also ran for 584 yards and seven touchdowns.
Golden Tiger head coach Willie Slater says his team faces a very demanding schedule.
“This year, we have two 1-AA (Alabama State and Alabama A&M), making it a much tougher schedule than usual,” Slater said.
Tickets for Tuskegee’s game against Alabama A&M in the 25th annual Circle City Classic in Indianapolis Oct. 4 are now on sale at Ticketmaster locations.
The game will be played at the brand new Lucas Oil Stadium.

In other Black college sports news: The campus of Tennessee State University was in mourning following the untimely death of former Tiger football player Qudus Adeboyejo.
A native of south suburban Matteson, he was found dead in his off-campus apartment near the Nashville university.
A senior majoring in health sciences, Adeboyejo, was scheduled to graduate in December.
“Qudus was a hard-working dedicated young man,” Tennessee State head football coach James Webster said. “The students, staff and administers here at the school will miss him.”
