SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Rep. Art Turner is still fighting for the Democratic nomination for Illinois lieutenant governor, despite word that the governor wants someone else. Meanwhile, Turner’s supporters warn the party could be weakened if Turner is rejected. Rep. Constance Howard on Friday said some black voters will conclude that Gov. Pat Quinn doesn’t value their support. Turner finished second in the Democrat primary last month. After the winner dropped out, his supporters felt Turner should get the nomination. But Quinn is leaning toward endorsing Sheila Simon, a white woman from southern Illinois who didn’t run in the primary. The Democratic State Central Committee will pick the nominee on Saturday.
