Trial begins in ex-senatorĀ“s mugging

A trial is underway in Cook County Circuit Court of a man accused of attempting to rob former U.S. senator and presidential candidate Carol Moseley Braun.

Joseph Dixon is accused of attacking Moseley Braun as she was entering her Hyde Park home late on April 27, 2007. The attack left the former senator with a broken wrist. In her opening statement Monday, prosecutor Adrienne Mebane said as the 39-year-old Dixon pulled a knife and began slashing at Moseley Braun and her purse strap, the scarf he was wearing over the lower portion of his face slipped. That allowed Moseley Braun to see her attacker. In her opening statement, public defender Sandra Parris questioned whether Moseley Braun saw Dixon’s face very clearly. She says after the attack the former senator refused to help police create a composite sketch of the attacker. (AP) ______ Copyright 2008 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
