Treasurer candidates spar over campaigning time

The Democratic candidate for Illinois treasurer says her Republican opponent spends too much time campaigning and not enough time doing his job as a state senator.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) — The Democratic candidate for Illinois treasurer says her Republican opponent spends too much time campaigning and not enough time doing his job as a state senator. Sen. Dan Rutherford missed 473 votes in the last session, the second-highest absence rate of any state senator. Only Sen. Bill Brady, who’s running for governor, has missed more votes. But Rutherford denies Democrat Robin Kelly’s claim that politics kept him away from voting. He tells WJBC radio that he missed many votes because his role as assistant Republican leader in the Senate kept him in negotiations with other legislative leaders at the time. Rutherford counters that Kelly has also spent time away from her state job to campaign. Kelly is chief of staff to Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias. Copyright 2010 The Associated Press.
