Traffic Reroute Begins at 73rd and S. Cottage Grove Avenues

Norfolk Southern, in coordination with the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), and all other impacted utilities, announces that bridge replacement projects will begin at 73rd Street and S. Cottage Grove Avenue on Monday, April 10, 2023.

These railroad bridges are located between South Chicago Avenue and the Chicago Skyway.  The traffic plan shows the planned reroutes along MLK Drive and 71st Street, including for the CTA’s #4 bus route.

A total of 8 railroad bridges will be completely replaced, including their substructures.  These railroad bridges handle approximately 55 daily freight trains and 14 Amtrak trains.

This major capital investment will ensure the continued safe operation of overhead train traffic for the next 100 years along one of the nation’s busiest rail corridors.  As part of the project scope, city sidewalks, pavement, and lighting will be replaced and improved at these bridge locations.  The project will also eliminate the existing center bent columns from the middle of both streets.

The ICC Group is the project’s prime contractor, in collaboration with a team of five dis-advantaged business enterprise (DBE) sub-contractors.

Norfolk Southern and the ICC Group plan to host multiple DBE networking workshops on-site during this two-year project to further facilitate additional partnership opportunities for future railroad bridge replacement projects.
