‘Tom Joyner Morning Show’ Off the Air in Dallas where it’s Based

Dallas area fans of radio legend Tom Joyner got a real shock this past Monday when they tuned to K-Soul 94.5. The “Tom Joyner Morning Show” wasn’t there!
It seems that Radio One, which owns part of Joyner’s company, Reach Media, switched the format of K-Soul to something called Boom, which is basically classic hip-hop. The company’s goal is to appeal to Generation X listeners.
That means what Tom does and who Tom primarily appeals to, isn’t compatible with the new direction, reports WFAA.com.
“Due to the format change to the classic hip-hop format and Boom 94.5, we just felt the show didn’t align with the current direction of the station,” explained Gary Spurgeon, general manager of Radio One in Dallas
The bottom line is that Joyner is still heard by more than 8 million listeners on almost 100 stations, but unfortunately he’s no longer on the radio in his hometown. On the other hand, Dallas fans (and listeners all over the USA and the world) can still hear him via the internet at www.tjms.com.
The station is hoping for bigger ratings, but it may lose some listeners along the way. Several posted tweets like this one from “Shady Sadie”:
“Why did I not hear @TJMshow this morning on 94.5 in Dallas? My whole day is gonna be off now.”
“I think we all feel the same way our listeners do,” Spurgeon said. “It’s never an easy thing. These are tough decisions we have to make.
