Tollway board approves carpool lanes

The Illinois Tollway board has decided to spend $400 million to create carpool lanes. The "Green Lane" concept would convert the left lanes of the tollway’s most congested areas into carpool lanes. If you’re driving with at least one other passenger, you can use these lanes and pay the regular I-Pass rate. If you’re driving by yourself, you’d have to pay a higher rate. Hybrid drivers in the express lanes would pay a toll higher than carpoolers but less than solo drivers. The rates have not yet been set. Tollway spokeswoman Joelle McGinnis said the tollway wants to have its first pilot carpool lane segment in place by 2010. She said the tollway is looking at existing green lane operations around the country to figure out what technology will be available to enforce proper use. AP ______ Copyright 2008 Associated Press.
