The Illinois State Toll Highway Authority is offering drivers who have racked up toll violations a break on the fines they owe. Normally, drivers who fail to pay a toll get a notice from the toll authority telling them they have 21 days to pay the toll plus a $20 fine, or to request a hearing. If they ignore the notice, $50 is added to the fine. Starting this week and continuing through June 30, the toll authority is dropping the additional $50 in fines and won’t suspend violators’ driver’s licenses. According to the toll authority, a typical toll violator has nine outstanding violations and owes more than $700. Under the program, violators can pay $200 plus the tolls to clear their record.
