*1950: Writer Gloria Naylor was born.

*1966: The first Black woman, Constance Baker Motley, was appointed to a federal judgeship.

*1972: U.S. Rep. Shirley Chisholm began her campaign for U.S. President.

*1980: Black Entertainment Television debuted. It’s the first Black-owned company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
