*1900: Anti-lynching bill to make lynching a federal offense was proposed. The bill didn’t pass committee.

*1920: Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded.

*1986: King Holiday was first celebrated.

*1993: Maya Angelou delivered poem at President Bill Clinton’s inauguration.

*2001: Colin Powell, the first U.S. Black Secretary of State, was sworn in.
