*1985: Brenda Pearson, court reporter for the House of Representatives, was first Black woman to record the President’s State of the Union message in House chambers.

*1986: Debi Thomas became first Black to win the Women’s Singles of the U.S. National Figure Skating Championship.

*1986: Oprah Winfrey became first Black woman to host a nationally syndicated talk show.
