Thousands gathering for Chicago immigration rally

Immigration activists have begun marching toward Federal Plaza in downtown Chicago to demand comprehensive immigration reform. They’re chanting and carrying banners demanding citizenship opportunities for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. and an end to raids and deportations. The crowd of a few thousand is much lighter than in previous years. Organizers had hoped for 15,000. Waukegan resident Armando Pena believes many stayed away because of worries over swine flu, but others were afraid of being fired if they took the day off. Similar gatherings are planned throughout the U.S., with activists hoping to persuade the Democratic-led Congress to pass immigration reform. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press.
