BANGUI, Central African Republic — An aid group says fresh violence between the army and rebels in the Central African Republic has forced as many as 8,000 people to flee their homes. Gabriel Ibarra, head of the Doctors Without Borders mission there, said Thursday that villages have been burnt down, forcing civilians into the bush during the height of the rainy season. Clashes between the army and a rebel group near the town of Kabo over the past two weeks had "dramatic consequences for the population," says the charity. The charities workers have visited empty villages and spoken to people living in the bush with nothing, no protection from mosquitoes or rain. The country’s two main rebel groups signed a peace deal with the government last year, but a dissident group refused to sign. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
