Things to do in Chicago with Kids this Summer

Summer Break has arrived! Picnics, vacations, outdoor activities, and family fun are on the horizon. School is out for scholars around the world and many need to remain stimulated. If you’re looking for upcoming programs or summer events for your scholars, take a look at the list below.

Summer Sports Skills Camps. CPS is offering Summer Sports Skills camps for students in 5th-12th grade for free! If you are interested in registering your child for summer camp, please fill out the registration form. The Summer Sports Skills camps staff can’t wait to work with youth to enhance their skills while out for summer break. For more information click on the link below.

Chance and Bri’s Book Breakfast. If you’re looking for educational fun for your child/children ages 3-8, register your child for Chance and Bri’s Book Breakfast on July 23rd from 10:00 am-1:00 pm. There will be story time, literacy games, and family portraits. In order to register, families must have a school-aged scholar between the ages of 3-8. For more information, click on the link below.

Summer Learning Challenge at the Library

Libraries across the city of Chicago have a variety of programs for children and adults to engage in.

Create, Play, Grow! Children ages 2-6 and their caregivers are encouraged to attend this structured play event that will include STEM activities, sensory discovery, and various art projects. Other dates for this event are Friday, July 15, 29th, and August 12th.

Harold Washington Library Center

YOUmedia Teen Portable Recording Certification. On Friday, July 1st from 2:00 pm- 3:00 pm the Harold Washington Library Center will host a certification program for teens ages 14-18 on how to use a Zoom recorder so teens can begin producing audio wherever they go. This activity will take place every Friday through the month of July and end August 19th.

YOUmedia Teen Livestream Certification. If you know a teen between the ages of 14-18 who wants to get a jump start on learning how to navigate through Twitch, use OBS studio, audio, lighting, and video to create Livestream content, this is the program for them. Every Tuesday and Thursday, beginning June 21st at the Harold Washington Library Center from 2:00 pm- 3:00 pm teens can participate in this exhilarating program.

Sherman Park

On Saturday, July 2nd from 10:00 am- 4:00 pm kids between the ages of 5-13 can stop by the branch for a Grab and Go Kit. Each kit contains craft or STEM creation materials. For more information on this program, click the link below.

CPS Summer Meals and Lunch Stop Programs. Chicago Public School students attending summer school will have access to nutritious meals during the break. The summer food service program will offer breakfast and lunch, not only for scholars in summer school but for children ages 1-18. Beginning June 22nd– August 28th, Monday through Friday from 9:00 am- 1:00 pm at various locations throughout the city.

Families can also travel to Navy Pier, and the Shedd Aquarium, and enjoy movies at the park, Brookfield, or Lincoln Park Zoos. You can also take a trolley tour or visit some of the city’s art galleries. The summer can bring about fun times to create memories with family and friends. There are so many things to do in this wonderful city many call home. No matter what you decide to do, make sure it brings you and your child/children closer together.
