Trinity United Church of Christ is preparing to officially welcome the Rev. Otis Moss III as pastor of the church, following the Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s retirement over a year ago.

Sunday, Moss will receive the mantle that he believes his teaching and training has prepared him for. The 38-year-old pastor’s credentials – in ministry and in the community – place him among the who’s who of the nation’s leading pastors. The Morehouse grad, who got his Master’s of Divinity degree from Yale University, is the son of the renowned Rev. Otis Moss Jr.

This week, TUCC host distinguished guests for the celebratory services including Jonathan Slocomb, Dr. Cynthia Hale, Dr. Charles Booth and Dr. Otis Moss Jr. Recently I had the opportunity to chat with Rev. Moss about his new role at TUCC.

CD: How long did it take you to decide if you wanted to pastor TUCC?

OM: I fasted and prayed for over a year. The main thing is that I wanted to make sure that it was what God was calling me and my family to do. I wanted to be clear.

CD: In light of the controversy with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and former member, then-presidential candidate Barack Obama, did you ever question God about your assignment as pastor?

OM: Absolutely! Wow, my first day in the pulpit was the day the media controversy started and my question was, ‘OK God, now you called me and now I am in the middle of a storm’…looking back in hindsight I realized God had placed us here in Chicago for such a time as this.

CD: Newsweek said you were one of “God’s foot soldier’s committed to transforming the lives of youth.” How are you working with the youth at Trinity and Chicago?
