The Museum of Science and Industry Officially Gets a New Name After Gift

The Museum of Science and Industry in Hyde Park has a new name: the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry.

The name change was announced back in 2019 when the museum received a $125 million gift from Chicago billionaire Kenneth C. Griffin, the largest single gift in the institution’s history.

The Griffin MSI will have new logos and exhibits as well. To commemorate the occasion, the museum  will open its doors to allow for free admission to all on Sunday, May 19.

Griffin MSI announced its plans to unveil a “fresh, new identity via social media.

On Tuesday, Griffin MSI President and CEO Dr. Chevy Humphrey wrote a letter to community members about the new name:

Dear MSI community,

I am writing to share some thrilling news regarding our beloved institution. Today, we publicly announced that we are now officially the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry.

For nearly a century, our museum has been a beacon of scientific exploration and industrial innovation, inspiring countless individuals to pursue their passions and push the boundaries of knowledge. In 2019, we were fortunate to announce the extraordinary $125M naming gift from Kenneth C. Griffin, a historic contribution that has paved the way for transformative change within our organization.

This monumental donation has empowered us to secure our future, develop cutting-edge exhibits tailored to the next generation of scientists and leaders, and enhance science education in our local communities in unprecedented ways.

As we embark on this exciting new chapter, I am delighted to provide you with a sneak peek of what’s to come. Our new logo, designed with the essence of our heritage, maintains the iconic cube but with a contemporary twist—softer edges that symbolize our commitment to inclusivity and accessibility for all.

To commemorate this momentous occasion, I am delighted to inform you that May 19th will mark our inaugural day as Griffin MSI. To celebrate, we will be offering free admission for all. It promises to be a day brimming with excitement and exploration.

In addition to our new identity, we are thrilled to announce the launch of several exciting exhibits and experiences made possible by Ken Griffin’s generous gift, including the renovated Henry Crown Space Center, home to the awe-inspiring SpaceX Dragon Spacecraft, as well as Griffin Studio and its premier exhibition “Notes to Neurons.”

For more information about our upcoming events and exhibits, please visit our Griffin MSI landing page: https://www.msichicago.org/explore/about-us/rebrand/.

Thank you for your continued dedication and support as we embark on this exciting journey of growth and innovation. Together, we will continue to inspire the next generation of scientific leaders and thinkers.

With gratitude,

Dr. Chevy Humphrey

President and CEO
