The legendary Nina Simone’s daughter carries on the legacy

Simone, the daughter of the famous pianist and vocal stylist the late Dr. Nina Simone, will debut her first solo album and pay tribute to her late mother at the Old Town School of Folk Music, 4544 N. Lincoln Ave. May 3 at 8 p.m. Born Lisa Celeste Stroud,

The album, Simone on Simone, honors the contribution Nina Simone made to the music industry. The official album release is May 13 and includes not only the music of the talented daughter Simone as a solo artist, but also some of the never before released works of Nina Simone.

In 1998, Simone made her Chicago debut as a member of the cast of Rent in the first national tour of the production. Simone played Mimi Marquez in Jonathan Larson’s musical based on Puccini’s opera La Bohemia, earning nominations for the Helen Hayes and Jefferson Awards. She decided to remain in Chicago when the show ended.

She became a member of an acid jazz band, Liquid Soul, which earned a Grammy nomination for their album Here’s The Deal. Simone earned the National Broadway Theater Award for Best Actress in a Musical for AIDA. . Dr. Nina Simone jetted to see her daughter star in AIDA in 2002. The young actress/singer was thrilled as she heard her mother in the crowd.

“She yelled out from the audience when I was onstage!” Simone said. Simone never saw her mother again. On April 21, 2003, Nina Simone died in her home in the South of France%uFFFDa few days before she was to visit her daughter during a Broadway break from performances of AIDA. “My mother began to support me in my choice of a musical career in 1999,” Simone reflected. “She finally wanted my star to rise.

I remember when we sang together at the Welter Theater in Los Angeles. We sang one of her songs, Compensation and she accompanied me. She was grinning in spite of herself.” After completing AIDA in June of 2003, Simone went on to sing throughout New York.

That year Simone performed with her uncle, Sam Waymon, in a memorial tribute to her mother at New York’s Blue Note. She also performed with members of Nina’s original band at Carnegie Hall in a Jazz Festival tribute that same year. She continues to keep her mother alive through her own music.
