Black-Owned Women Gift Guide chicago defender

How do you shop for a Black woman with a unique style that makes a bold statement like no other, sets her apart, and is difficult to define? Picking out a gift that suits her taste and makes her feel amazing can be challenging, nerve-wracking, and even exhausting. Here is a list of Black women-owned shops that are sure to make the shopping experience enjoyable for the gift giver and will help take the guesswork out of choosing the perfect gift for the special Black women in your life.

Sultry Steps

If you are looking for an upscale boutique specializing in fashionable women’s footwear, apparel, and accessories, Sultry Steps is the place. The shop has trendy, artsy, and chic styles to choose from and features some one-of-a-kind pieces. With “sensual, sexy, and functional” offerings that include the fashion of many Chicago designers, shop owner Marquisha Washington aims to fulfill the 21st-century woman’s needs.

When asked about scoring the perfect gift for the black women in your life, Marquisha Washington said, “Find out what the woman loves. We can recommend the hottest items based on individual style.”

After starting in 2015 as an online shop and then evolving into a boutique in the Chicagoland Suburb of South Holland in 2016, Sultry Steps is now part of the Roosevelt Collection Shops in the heart of Chicago’s lively, South Loop neighborhood. December marks the store’s first anniversary at this location. The pandemic has brought challenges, but the upside of having to close the doors for over three months is that the website has taken off.

With online shopping, you can either pick up in-store, select curbside pickup, or get free shipping for purchases of $100 or more. Visit the website at www.sultrysteps.com, where you can also find out about seasonal specials. The store address is 1112 South Delano Court. The hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Call (312) 964-5114 for more information. L Warbington World of Fashion and Accessories

Referring to herself as “Chicago’s original purple pop-up jewelry diva,” Lanette Warbington has been at it for 15 years, making appearances around town while gracing people with her unique, eclectic style and larger-than-life personality. She describes her clothing and accessories as chic and jazzy with pizzazz. She has statement pieces that speak volumes and make you stand out. She says it takes a confident woman to wear her fashions.

When it comes to gift-giving for black women, Lanette Warbington said, “To help a client select the perfect gift for that special lady, I will ask what they have in mind. I also ask for a picture of her. A picture says a lot about what a woman likes. I can help pick that special something that melts her heart and makes her smile.”

Lanette Warbington said that she has been fortunate to have a loyal clientele that has continued to support her in these challenging times. She considers her business to be a blessing.

You can shop online at www.lanettewarbington.net. To schedule an order pickup, available on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., call (773) 671-5600 or email at Smile@LWarbington.com. You can also find @LWarbington on Facebook.

DSC Vision Corner

Located at the intersection of fierce, fabulous, and full-figured is where you will find DSC Vision Corner. Described by owner Donna Coleman as “the fashion boutique where Curvy Girls rule,” DSC Vision Corner carries classic, moderately priced plus size women’s clothing and accessories. Donna Coleman said that people are unsure of what to expect before they shop with her, but what they discover is a variety of stylish and flattering options.

“The perfect gift for that special woman in your life is the one you want her to have, not one that she requests,” said Donna Coleman. “Imagine her wearing it, carrying it, or smelling it on herself. It’s a gift from you, and that’s what makes it perfect!”

Donna Coleman started DSC Vision Corner as a pop-up shop in December 2017 after completing a 12-week entrepreneurship-training program. Armed with the tools to become a successful business owner, she made the bold decision to walk away from her corporate job. The pandemic has caused her to pivot the business in unimaginable ways. She has gone from a brick-and-mortar store to a successful at-home shop and will soon enter the world of e-commerce for convenient online shopping. Despite the absence of vendor events and the closing of wholesale distributors and suppliers, Donna Coleman has kept her business going through networking, pooling resources, and leveraging her connections with other shop owners.

DSC Vision Corner launches a new website later this month. Plans are also in the works for a permanent brick and mortar store. In the meantime, you can see what DSC Vision Corner has to offer and check for updates on Instagram @DSCVision or Facebook @DSCVisionCorner. Call (708) 299-8468 for more information or to schedule an appointment for in-person shopping.

Hey Lady

Hey Lady💋is a lifestyle brand curated for ALL women over forty who have a passion for fashion, a love of travel, and are interested in owning or growing their business. Created by CEO LaeTania Richardson, Hey Lady focuses on the forty and over demographic. In addition to products, the Hey Lady brand wants to change the narrative of the 40+ demographic. Through multiple platforms, we will highlight diverse women who have learned to take care of their children, spouses, and careers, and herself.

LaeTania says, “The forty-and-over demographic is generally ignored and misrepresented by brands. Most brands are focused on either millennials or seniors and, consequently, underestimate women’s spending power and intelligence over forty. There are large groups of women forty and over who tend to put everyone else before themselves. Somewhere along the way, the message became “as a woman, you must sacrifice yourself for the sake of everyone else.”

Their Luxe Candles are a perfect gift for black women in need of a little “me time.” They make a great stocking stuffer or gift for a friend. Starting at $24.50, they are available in Champagne Rose and Verbena Luxe. For other products and services, check out their website at www.heyladybytania.com.
