‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’ on stage

The Greatest Story Ever Told hits the stage at Arie Crown Theater at McCormick Place for two evenings, March 29 and 30 at 8 p.m., featuring a host of noted Hollywood actors and comedians.

Co-creator of the Cosby Show, Taxi and nine-time Emmy Award winner Ed Weinberger, along with ESPN correspondent and former NBA star Jalen Rose, present the stage play that is touring across the nation.

The Greatest Story Ever Told is set in Los Angeles with a meddling mother who is concerned about her daughter getting married and a father who is trilled that his young girl is now a woman. Yet, the father discovers that his daughter is pregnantû by someone other than her boyfriend.

The Greatest Story Ever Told is a hilarious love story featuring some of the more recognizable actors and actresses in Hollywood, including James Avery (Fresh Prince of Bel- Air) Anna Maria Horsford (Amen, and The Wayans Bros.), Miguel A. Nunez Jr. (Sparks and Juwanna Mann), Tatyana Ali (Fresh Prince of Bel-Air), and Clifton Davis (That’s My Mama and Amen). Also appearing in the comedy are David Ramsey (Hair Show) and comedians Guy Torry and Arif Kinchen.

The production makes reference the birth, life, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is believed that this theatrical creation of Weinberger and Rose’s is based on the biblical story of Mary and Joseph, when it was discovered that Mary was with child.

This production, though, injects comedy into the classic bible story. Davis, who is cast as the Minister in the play, was born in Provident Hospital in Chicago on October 4, 1945. His father was a minister and Clifton is also an ordained Minister in the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Davis co-hosts the Christian Lifestyle Magazine television program and is a frequent guest on Trinity Broadcast Network. Creator of the comedy Weinberger is son of an Award-winning legendary television producer. Weinberger’s career began as a writer for the social activist, Dick Gregory. He also wrote for Bob Hope, Richard Pryor and Johnny Carson.

He earned significance in the entertainment arena as the writer and producer of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and served as co-creater and producer of such television classics as Dear John and Amen. He also produced Sparks and Good News.

He has received tree Golden Globe Awards and a Peabody Award. The current comedy is providing him with the opportunity to continues the celebration of the life and legacy of his son Jack. Horsford serves as the play’s producer and is one of the characters in the comedy, starring as Anne, Mary’s mother.

Producers of the show include Three Tier Entertainment are Hutson Miller, and Adel Nur. The hilarious comedy happens when Mary (Tatyana Ali) informs her fiancée of seven years that she is having a baby. Mary’s fiancé, Joseph (David Ramsey) cannot realize that such an event is happening. In contrast to Mary’s (Ali) mother Anne (Horsford) is extremely frustrated.
