The 72nd Emmys is betting on Black.

After being snubbed at the 69th Emmys, Insecure star Issa Rae told Variety during a red-carpet interview, “I’m rooting for everybody Black.” Three years later, Blacks have received a little over 34% of the Emmy nods.  Up from just short of 20% last year.

And the category is:

Sterling K. Brown received a nomination for outstanding lead actor in a drama series for This Is Us as well as a nomination for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.  Another This Is Us star Ron Cephas received a nomination for outstanding guest actor in a drama series.

In the category of outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie, Regina King was nominated for Watchmen, Octavia Spencer received a nomination for Self-Made. Kerry Washington was recognized for her role in Little Fires Everywhere.

Zendaya was recognized for her groundbreaking role as Rue Bennett in Euphoria, receiving a nomination for outstanding lead actress in a drama series — her first-ever Emmy nomination.

Pose star Billy Porter was nominated for outstanding lead actor in a drama series. Netflix’s Hollywood Jeremy Pope was nominated for outstanding lead actor in a limited series or a movie.

Anthony Anderson and Don Cheadle were both nominated for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series.  Anderson’s TV wife Tracee Ellis Ross also received a nomination for black-ish in the category of outstanding lead actress in a comedy series and will battle it out against Insecure’s Issa Rae.  Yvonne Orji, who plays Issa’s best friend, was nominated for outstanding supporting actress.  Rae produced, A Black Lady Sketch Show, was recognized for outstanding variety/sketch series and outstanding guest actress with the nomination of Angela Bassett.

Maya Rudolph was also nominated in the same category — twice. She received a nomination for outstanding guest actress for Saturday Night Live for playing Senator Kamala Harris and The Good Place. For her role in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Wanda Sykes was recognized for outstanding guest actress in a comedy series.

Three women of color received directing nods: Dime Davis for HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show, Linda Mendoza for Netflix’s Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready and Nadia Hallgren for Netflix’s Becoming.

Three of the six nominees for animation voice-over performance and half of the ten the short form acting nominees are Black.

The entertainment industry is making strides in recognizing people of color as a record number of Black actors received Emmy Award nominations this year.  In that same Variety interview, Issa Rae went on to say, “I’m betting on Black.”  Let’s hope Black wins in 2020.
