The 730 freshmen and transfer students from 42 states and 15 countries that form Morehouse College’s 150th class started their collegiate journey on August 10 with the annual New Student Orientation commencement ceremony.
“It feels great,” said Arshad Ali, a freshman from Chicago.  “From the moment you get on campus, you see all the tradition; you feel so welcomed by your big brothers and everybody’s here to greet you and to let you know you’re part of something special.”
The ceremony is one of the college’s long-standing traditions and means that the incoming young men are now a part of the Morehouse brotherhood — one that includes world leaders such as U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, filmmaker Shelton “Spike” Lee, famed Olympian Edwin Moses, and civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.
“I suspect that you are here because you want to become a different kind of man,” President John Silvanus Wilson Jr., class of 1979, told the new students.  “Not just a regular man, but a Morehouse Man.  In order to do that, you have to have inside you, right now, a sense of destiny.”
