Thanksgiving Memories

TV Dinner

Thanksgiving brings back many memories of my large family and laughter around the table. They’ve all passed on but not forgotten.
I usually take this day as just another day, but today I realized I was actually the last one living.
So I thought of a man with his memories years later, when I wrote this poem.
And then I realized that man was me.
I ain’t crying, I’m blessed I had them memories, that’s what thanksgiving is about being blessed.
So as I eat this TV dinner, I’m wishing you all the best.

Memories at Thanksgiving
This is the time I miss you most,
the tables empty now,
the laughter’s turned to memories.
The turkeys turned into a TV dinner,
and the house is empty now.
But even in this lonely house,
that we once called home.
I see you, sitting in your favorite chair,
with the radio turned on.
I can still hear all your favorite songs,
Nat King Cole brought you to tears.
You loved that man with his velvet voice,
you called him Gods black angel.
And lets not talk about the meal you’d cook,
I can taste it now.
All my favorite things, spread out on the table.
But first before we lift a fork,
lets not forget, the blessing that we have,
and all the children sleeping on the streets,
and families without love.
And then, before the lights went out,
you’d share a kiss with me.
I remember your warm embrace,
and your tender words of love before you tucked me in.
Those were the best of times.
I’m thankful for each moment.
But now its just me,and my memories, sitting at this table.
And in them all I see you here, just like yesterday.
Thank God I have them all, to brighten up this day.
And that tender kiss to make me smile,
and Nat to make me cry, as I think of you.
