CHAMPAIGN, Ill.— A group of people living in tents at a Champaign dining hall for the homeless want the city to lease them a lot to call home. Jesse Massengale is one of the eight people who live at what they call the Safe Haven Tent Community. They’ve pitched their tents at the Catholic Worker House, which serves lunch to the homeless and sometimes offers them shelter, too. The city has notified the Catholic Worker House the tents violate local zoning ordinances. Massengale told the city council he’s willing to move if the city leases a vacant lot for the homeless. Council members like Karen Foster say they’re skeptical of the idea, at the very least. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
