Congratulations to a fave media sistah, Lynn Norment, former Ebony magazine editor. She’s among four outstanding journalists to be inducted into the National Association of Black Journalists’ Hall of Fame during its Annual Convention and Career Fair in Tampa, Fla., Aug. 5-9. Other inductees are Earl Caldwell, reporter and early civil rights activist (New York); Peggy Peterman, reporter, columnist and editorial writer, St. Petersburg Times in Florida, (posthumous); and Larry Whiteside, reporter, The Boston Globe (posthumous).
“These remarkable persons endured great challenges so that Black journalists today can have more freedom and professional opportunity,” said Barbara Ciara, NABJ president, when announcing the honorees. “As Hall of Fame inductees, their memory and accomplishments will be preserved and passed on to future generations.”
Past inductees include Ida B. Wells, W.E.B. Dubois, John H. Johnson, Vernon Jarrett and Charlayne Hunter Gault. The NABJ convention is one of the largest gatherings of minority journalists in the country.
Lynn has written and edited for Ebony since 1977. She worked to guide young journalists while bringing objective, endearing reporting of the nation’s Black artists and entertainers to the publication’s readers for three decades. A native of Bolivar, Tenn., who helped desegregate her local high school, Lynn went on to receive a full scholarship to Memphis State University.
Her writing talent and leadership traits were quickly evident to Johnson Publishing Co., which hired her after just two freelance assignments. Rising to the rank of managing editor, she helped the 60-year-old magazine maintain a fresh voice and embrace new media, making her a well-respected leader in the industry. She also held numerous leadership positions for NABJ: chair of the ‘97 Chicago Convention attended by former President Bill Clinton; chair of the 25th Anniversary; and a former vice chair of the NABJ A&E Task Force.
Magic Music – “Thank You Lord” is the theme when the Women’s Chorus of Trinity United Church of Christ hosts its 25th annual concert on Sunday, 2:30 p.m., in the church sanctuary, 400 W. 95th St. This musical extravaganza will be highlighted by hymns, anthems, spirituals and hand-clapping, foot-stomping gospel music, outstanding soloists and a special guest artist Sydne Evans, psalmist. Originally established to provide the ministry of music for Trinity’s annual celebration of Women’s Day, the group’s popularity expanded, and under the direction of the late Dr. Jeffrey P. Radford, became the Women’s Chorus in 1984 and sang regularly on Sundays and during other services. The 225-voice choir is under the direction of Ron Anderson; Bryan Johnson is assistant director and Ivy Hendon Jackson, choral director. The Rev. Otis Moss III pastors Trinity United Church of Christ; the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. is pastor emeritus. Angela Pough chairs TUCC’s Women’s Chorus and Clementine Coleman chairs the concert committee. BTW, Teesee is a member of the Women’s Chorus and all y’all are invited to attend and receive a blessing. That’s a guarantee! Admission is free!
