Internationally renowned sports legend turned multi-millionaire entrepreneur, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, comes this way to pick up the coveted “Spirit of Sinai” award on June 27 when Sinai Community Institute celebrates 16 years of delivering services to the community. The annual gala, Connecting to Our Community, will be staged at Soldier Field’s United Club (remember the Cadillac Club?) with cocktails at 6 p.m., then dinner, silent auction, awards and dancing to the sultry, rhythmic sounds of Flow Orchestra.

SCI, whose community services span from infants to the elderly, is a member of Sinai Health System, serving over 25,000 individuals a year while enhancing its vision to become the national model for urban health care delivery.

The benefit is being guided by highly accomplished civic and community powerhouses: Harris Bank’s Yasmin T. Bates-Brown, Loop Capital/The Steans Family’s Albert R. Grace Jr. and Walgreen’s Gleatha W. Glispie. Also on the 35-member committee: Cheryl Blackwell-Bryson, Leslie Mitchell Bond, Robin Boyd-Clark, Charles Brown, Leslie D. Davis, Redessa Harris and Harriet Seymore. Emcee: Christian Farr of WTTW-TV Ch. 11’s "Chicago Tonight."

Debra Wesley, SCI founder and president and SHS executive vice president for community outreach, has been successful in identifying the social needs of the community and then establishing effective programs that address them. She’s highly recognized for her work to help empower the lives of those most in need, and is a member of several national and local boards and organizations. In order to make the event available to a wide range of attendees, organizers have created two ticket rates: $250 for the entire evening (6 p.m. – 11 p.m.) and $100 for dessert, drinks, dancing and auction (8:30 p.m. – 11 p.m.).
