Former state Senate President Emil Jones, a mentor to President Barack Obama back in the day, sits in the hot seat when he’s interviewed by WVON-AM/1690’s Cliff (“no-holds barred”) Kelley on Feb. 23 at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the Student Center East, 750 S. Halsted. It’s part of the Agents of Change 2009 Speaker Series, named in honor of Dr. Frances G. Carroll, U. of I. trustee, in collaboration with the university and The HistoryMakers.
The collaboration also includes interactive exhibits on all three U of I. campuses (Chicago, Springfield, Urbana-Champaign), use of HistoryMakers materials in the university’s classrooms and a summer fellowship institute for students to hone their research skills while learning more about oral and public history. The series and exhibits began last week in Springfield with Ambassador Carol Moseley Braun and continues Feb. 23 with Jones in Chicago and Feb. 25 with Julian Bond in Urbana- Champaign.
Honorary co-chairs are Paula Allen- Meares, UIC chancellor; Mayor Richard M. Daley, Commissioner Lula M. Ford and B. Joseph White, U.of I. president.

High Tea–Cheryle Jackson, Chicago Urban League president/ CEO, and Scott Baskin, owner of the Mark Shale clothing stores, receive Creating a Community That Works Awards at North Lawndale Employment Network’s fourth annual Sweet Beginnings Tea on Friday, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m., at the Park Hyatt Hotel. This pre-Valentine high tea benefits NLEN’s employment and training programs. NLEN, a non-profit organization, is the parent company of Sweet Beginnings LLC, a for-profit company that provides transitional job training and work experience for formerly incarcerated and other low-income residents. Sweet Beginnings’ employees participate in a jobs program that grows and harvests natural, chemical-free honey and are trained in beekeeping, food handling, retail sales, inventory and distribution.
