Timothy Rand, entrepreneur, civic and business leader and one of 11 persons honored as a Chicago Defender Newsmaker on Saturday has been elected to the Board of Directors of ShoreBank, a subsidiary of ShoreBank Corp., the holding company. Rand is founder and majority owner of Midway Airport Concessionaires at Midway International Airport. When the company started in 1989, it was the airport’s only food and beverage concessions management company. In 2002, it received the contract to help redevelop the newly reconfigured concession area. Under Rand’s leadership, MAS built six new restaurants and improved some 6,300 square-feet of retail space at the airport. MAS now owns and operates 12 restaurants at Midway Airport. In addition, he is a principal of Airport Restaurant Management, a food and beverage concessions management company, and an investor in the Casino Queen, the Chicago Signature Services, LLC, which operates hospitality and banquet services at Navy Pier and McCormick Place.

Rand grew up in the family’s retail and wholesale liquor business, Midway Wholesalers, one of a few remaining independent beverage wholesalers on the South Side, which is still owned by other members of his family.

Rand, a grad of Southern Illinois University and a resident of the Kenwood community, is a co-founder of the annual Chicago Football Classic, which stresses the importance of education to African American students and supports historically African American colleges and universities. His community service and civic activities involve organizations whose missions embrace education: Chicago Urban League, Make a Wish Foundation, Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, DuSable Museum and the Council on Chicago Public School Partnerships.

“Rand will be an excellent addition to our board,” said Ron Grzywinski, ShoreBank Corp.’s chair and co-founder. “His business acumen, management experience and extensive record of community leadership will be great assets as we position ShoreBank for continued growth and work to extend our impact within the community.

Attn: Single Mamas!–If you’re a successful single mom, The Nielsen Co. and singlemamahood.com wants to recognize you at a tribute to “Super Single Mamas” – never married, divorced, separated or widowed African American women who are beating the odds by successfully raising their children alone, while making a mark in their community. One “Single Mama of the Year” will be honored and eight outstanding Super Single Mamas – nominated by the mothers’ family, friends and co-workers will be saluted for their outstanding parenting, career and community contributions at the third annual Sweet Singlemamahood Holiday High Tea, a free event for 200 single moms on Dec. 14, 3 p.m.-6 p.m., at The Narcissus Room at Macy’s on State St..

“Single motherhood is growing across all ethnic groups,” says Keisha Smith, Neilsen’s public affairs manager. “According to the National Center for Health Statistics, unmarried women head nearly 70 percent of households and the trend has many unique implications. At Nielsen, we believe that everyone counts, that’s why we’ve chosen the holiday season to tell single mothers, ‘You matter to your family and your community. We want to help alleviate some of the stress that’s so prevalent particularly around the holidays.’”

During the tea, “single mamas” will receive a much-needed break and a special performance by songbird Terisa Griffin. Defender readers are invited to nominate their favorite “single mama” by submitting a 100-word essay describing her contributions to family, career and community. Send e-mails to: nominations@rjdale.com Single mamas may also nominate themselves to receive one of the eight special awards. Include name, phone number and address for nominee and for the nominator.
