Timothy Rand, entrepreneur, civic and business leader and one of 11 persons honored as a Chicago Defender Newsmaker on Saturday has been elected to the Board of Directors of ShoreBank, a subsidiary of ShoreBank Corp., the holding company. Rand is founder and majority owner of Midway Airport Concessionaires at Midway International Airport. When the company started in 1989, it was the airport’s only food and beverage concessions management company. In 2002, it received the contract to help redevelop the newly reconfigured concession area. Under Rand’s leadership, MAS built six new restaurants and improved some 6,300 square-feet of retail space at the airport. MAS now owns and operates 12 restaurants at Midway Airport. In addition, he is a principal of Airport Restaurant Management, a food and beverage concessions management company, and an investor in the Casino Queen, the Chicago Signature Services, LLC, which operates hospitality and banquet services at Navy Pier and McCormick Place.
Rand grew up in the family’s retail and wholesale liquor business, Midway Wholesalers, one of a few remaining independent beverage wholesalers on the South Side, which is still owned by other members of his family.
Rand, a grad of Southern Illinois University and a resident of the Kenwood community, is a co-founder of the annual Chicago Football Classic, which stresses the importance of education to African American students and supports historically African American colleges and universities. His community service and civic activities involve organizations whose missions embrace education: Chicago Urban League, Make a Wish Foundation, Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, DuSable Museum and the Council on Chicago Public School Partnerships.

Happy B’Day–to Bernie Bickerstaff, 64, Chicago Bulls’ new assistant coach who spent last season as executive vice president of Basketball Operations for the Charlotte Bobcats. Before that, he served as the Bobcats’ head coach/GM during their first three years in the NBA. Hailing from Benham, Ky., Bickerstaff has over 30 years of NBA experience, including 13-plus seasons as a head coach, going 415-517 (.445) during that span and 12-21 (.364) in the postseason. Bickerstaff was also head coach for the Seattle SuperSonics, Denver Nuggets and Washington Bullets/Wizards. He’s coached his teams to the NBA playoffs five times and was named the 1987 NBA Coach of the Year while with Seattle.
