Emil Jones III, when the Black United Fund of Illinois presents its ninth annual “Living Legends/Passing the Torch” awards on Sept. 26 at the Museum of Science & Industry.

Others “passing it on” – Steve Baskerville, of CBS 2 News, to his son, Aaron Baskerville, of CLTV; Dr. William E. Woods to his daughters, Dr. Carmen Woods-Hollowell and Dr. Shaw Wendi Woods. The awards are bestowed annually on role models who actively transfer their vision and skills to groom the next generation of leaders.

BUFI, a self-help organization, which is an independent affiliate of the National Black United Fund, provides financial and technical support to projects that improve the quality of life in African-American communities. Helping People Help Themselves is BUFI’s motto, and since 1985, it has aided over 500 grassroots organizations and thousands of Illinoisans utilizing the principles of self-help, mutual aid and volunteerism. Dr. Mildred Clopton Harris, founder, pastor and CEO of God First Church & Ministries who was recently honored at the Chicago Defender’s second annual Pastors Salute Luncheon, can be seen on billboards across Illinois for Breast Cancer Awareness, sponsored by Access Comunity Health Network. Trumpeter Corey Wilkes and pianist Ken Chaney perform for Urban Aspirations’ An Evening of Jazz, a first-ever young natives’ student jam session and fundraiser, on July 15, 6 p.m., at Skia Restaurant, 740 W. 63rd St., on Kennedy-King College campus. Urban Aspirations needs to raise seed money and awareness to kick-off another round of “Young Natives,” slated to start in October and run through May, 2010.
