A free day of film screenings, panel discussions with top photographers and scholars and a reception highlights Bobby Sengstacke Appreciation Day on Saturday at Woodson Regional Library, 95th and Halsted Streets. Photos, including those from his early images of the civil rights movement to portraits of everyday life in Chicago will be on exhibit as part of the Vivian G. Harsh Collection’s yearlong series of the Chicago Alliance of African American Photographers. At the morning session, 10 a.m.-noon, two of his films, “The Sengstacke Eye” (17 mins.) and “Coppin’ the Ghost” (30 mins.), will be shown followed by a panel discussion with Tom Picou, former Chicago Defender editor and retired Real Times Media chair; Abdul Alkalimat, professor of African American Studies at U. of I.; and Charles O’Bannon, of O’Bannon Television and producer for Sengstacke Media Productions. Additional Sengstacke films, “Quintessential Women” (7 mins.) and “Portraits of Black Chicago,” the 2010 cut (30 mins.), will be shown during the afternoon session, 1:30 p.m.-4 p.m., followed by a panel of Bob Black, retired Sun-Times photojournalist; Eric Warner, photographer; and Nate Grant, a Chicago State Univ. professor. A reception, hosted by Vivian G. Harsh Society, will end the day. Winning Ways – Tonya Ojuluwayo, a caterer and owner of Splice Kitchen, is among a group of five “dynamic entrepreneurs” who will be celebrated on Thursday at the 10th annual MillerCoors Urban Entrepreneurs Series Winners’ Reception at its corporate headquarters on Wacker Drive. The five competed for an opportunity to win a total of $200,000 in business grants. Since 1999, MillerCoors has awarded $1.4 million to emerging minority businesses to stimulate economic growth and development in urban communities. The program provides additional Web-based educational resources including Webinars, blogs and business advice from national judges and past winners. The ultimate goal, says Larry Waters, MillerCoors’ director of multicultural relations, is to foster economic growth and to one day turn many of the winning businesses into minority suppliers for MillerCoors.
