A West Side high school athlete returned back to the basketball court after suffering a gunshot wound to his leg, but this time, not as a player. Jermaine Winfield, a junior at North Lawndale College Prep, was shot Tuesday in the thigh while coming to the aid of a friend after a basketball game at Collins High School. As Winfield and a few fellow teammates headed to the school’s parking lot after the game, a group of guys began to beat one of the players. The crowd left, and the team thought things were over. But the guys paid a return visit and shots rang out, hitting the 16-year-old in the thigh. “I didn’t even know I was hit,” Winfield said, only realizing the wound after he returned to the locker room and saw the blood. Winfield was released from the hospital the next day, with the bullet still lodged in his thigh. He will have to miss suiting up for games during the next two weeks. On Thursday, his team dedicated the game to him. The incident marked the second shooting this year outside of a high school during a sports activity. ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender.
