Tavis Smiley and Black Hollywood To Pay Tribute To Amiri Baraka This Saturday

EURweb–Tavis Smiley, Glynn Turman, Roger Gueneveur Smith, Rappers Yo Yo and X Clan’s Brother J are among the celebs slated to pay tribute to late poet laureate Amiri Baraka.
On Saturday, April 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles a who’s who roster of actors, poets, and entertainers will pay tribute to the late poet laureate and legendary activist Amiri Baraka (pictured) at a free community celebration.
Among the celebrities slated to participate are Tavis Smiley, Glynn Turman (Cooley High, A Different World), Roger Gueneveur Smith (A Huey P. Newton Story, Malcolm X, Oz), Ben Guillory (The Color Purple), Luis J. Rodriguez (Always Running: La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A.), rappers Yo Yo and Brother J (X Clan).
The event will feature appearances by radio personality and daughter of Baraka Dominique DiPrima (KJLH-FM, Front Page Show) and Baraka’s son Newark councilmember and current mayoral candidate Ras Baraka. Award-winning actor Wren T. Brown will host. The event is free and open to the public and sponsored in part by the Ebony Repertory Theatre, SuiteEvents, and Radio Free 102.3 FM KJLH. Amiri Baraka passed away on January 9, 2014. A playwright, poet, critic and activist, Baraka was one of the most prominent and controversial African American voices in the world of American letters.
