Target CEO Brian Cornell is set to meet with Rev. Al Sharpton amid boycotts against the retailer and a decrease in foot traffic spurred by its DEI rollback.
According to CNBC, Target called the meeting with Sharpton as some civil rights groups are urging consumers not to stop at Target following its decision to remove its DEI policies and initiatives.
Sharpton hasn’t called for a Target-specific boycott, but has supported efforts from other groups to stop shopping at the retail giant.
“You can’t have an election come and all of a sudden, change your old positions,” Sharpton said. “If an election determines your commitment to fairness then fine, you have a right to withdraw from us, but then we have a right to withdraw from you.”
Sharpton said he would weigh leading a Target boycott if the company fails to confirm its commitment to the Black community and Black-owned businesses.
“I said, ‘If [Cornell] wants to have a candid meeting, we’ll meet,’” Sharpton said of the Target call. “I want to first hear what he has to say.”
A Target spokesperson confirmed that Cornell is set to speak with Sharpton in New York this week.
