Chicago police say a man who is suspected of wearing a surgical mask and gloves to commit as many as 30 armed robberies has been fatally shot as he left another holdup. Officials say an FBI agent and Chicago police detective spotted the robber’s white van Wednesday as it pulled in to an alley near a Northwest Side gas station. Chicago Chief of Detectives Tom Byrne says they saw a man put a surgical mask on while walking to the store. He says the agent and detective radioed in then took positions outside the gas station’s door. Byrne says the man came out holding a bag of cash and a gun. He says that when the officials ordered him to put the weapon down, he pointed it at them. Byrne says the detective fatally shot the man. Officials aren’t identifying the suspected robber. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
