Surgeon: Ex-D.C. mayor improving after operation

WASHINGTON—Doctors say former Washington Mayor Marion Barry is recovering well from a kidney transplant, and may be released from the hospital by Thursday.

WASHINGTON—Doctors say former Washington Mayor Marion Barry is recovering well from a kidney transplant, and may be released from the hospital by Thursday.

Dr. Clive Callender says the 72- year-old D.C. City Council member has been moved from intensive care to a patient room at Howard University Hospital.

Callender is the surgeon who led the team that transplanted a kidney into Barry on Friday. Callender also says that Barry’s kidney donor, 47-year-old Kim Dickens, is “progressing well” and could be released Tuesday.
