An off-duty suburban Chicago police officer has shot and wounded three men after they allegedly beat him with a baseball bat and tried to rob him on Chicago’s South Side.

Chicago police say the Markham officer and an off-duty female colleague went to a home Friday to look at a used car they’d seen advertised online.

Police say one man led them through a gangway, where two others ambushed them. One hit the male officer in the chest with a bat while a second held a gun to the female officer’s head.

The male officer then pulled his gun and identified himself as police. Police say the suspect holding the gun turned the weapon on the male officer, and the officer opened fire, striking all three suspects.

No charges have yet been filed. Two suspects remain hospitalized.
