Chicago high school students will take the heat in the kitchen on Saturday, competing for culinary scholarships ranging from $500 to $85,000. The more than two dozen chefs-in-training from nine Chicago Public Schools will showcase their cooking skills in the 16th annual Careers through Culinary Arts Program Chicago Cooking Competition for Scholarships. At the Cooking and Hospitality Institute, 361 W. Chestnut St., the 25 finalists will have two hours to prepare from memory a two-course French meal –– Hunter’s chicken with turned, sauteed potatoes and fresh berry tart with pastry crime –– for a panel of 11 executive chefs from area restaurants and culinary arts programs. The C-CAP competition is a yearlong program that introduces students to the food service industry and assists them with career placement as chefs, restaurant managers and hotel administrators. Competition finalists attend Clemente, Corliss, Curie, Dunbar, Hyde Park, Manley, North Grand, Richards and Simeon high schools. The scholarships, to some of the most prestigious local and national culinary schools, will be awarded April 20 at Washburn Culinary Institute. Last year’s finalists received a total of $315,450 in scholarships. ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender. All rights reserved.
