CVCA student chefs, winners of the Healthy Schools Campaign’s Cooking up Change contest, prepared a healthy lunch for their peers Jan. 19.

The meal: oven-fried chicken, leafy greens and cabbage with sweet potato salad, took top honors in the contest. CVCA beat out 11 other CPS teams. The meal met the gold standard of the HealthierUS School Challenge, a cornerstone of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative.

CVCA chefs will compete in the national finals in May in Washington, D.C. Chef David Blackmon (center) works with CPS’ culinary program and also pens the Defender’s “Chef D” weekly column.
