CARBONDALE, Ill. — Cleanup continues in southern Illinois from last week’s deadly storm that still has tens of thousands of homes and businesses without elecricity. St. Louis-based utility Ameren says more than 29,000 customers are without power as of Monday morning. That’s down from a peak of 58,000 after last Friday’s storm. The storms were blamed in one Illinois death. Eighty-seven-year-old George Arbeiter died after a limb crashed onto his Murphysboro home and hit him on the back of his head, sending him down a flight of stairs. He died hours later at a hospital. Southern Illinois University in Carbondale was forced to remain closed Monday because the campus still had no power. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
