Stiffer gun penalties set

If you are convicted of carrying an unregistered firearm within 1,000 feet of a school, courthouse, park or public housing development within the city, Mayor Richard M. Daley wants you to go straight to jail and pay a stiffer fine. Daley will propose that anyone convicted would spend between 90 days and six months in jail, and pay a misdemeanor fine between $1,000 and $1,500. “It’s important to send a strong message. We will not tolerate guns in all of our communities,” Daley said Wednesday.
