GRANITE CITY, Ill. — U.S. Steel is calling back hundreds of workers who have been laid off from its Granite City plant for six months. Union leaders say they have been told very little about why some of the 2,000 currently laid off from the plant are being recalled. Union representatives told KSDK-TV in St. Louis they believe businesses that use US Steel need new inventory. Company officials said they don’t comment on staffing matters. The Granite City plant began the layoffs in December after the bottom abruptly fell out of the steel market as part of a global recession. At the company’s yearly shareholders meeting in April, U.S. Steel CEO John Surma said any restart at the plant would depend on how soon the orders rally. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press.
