CHICAGO (AP) — A state senator is calling for a hearing into financial mismanagement uncovered by an audit of Chicago State University.

Sen. Edward Maloney, a Chicago Democrat, is citing a report by Auditor General William Holland that showed 41 problems at the university from July 2009 to June 2010. The audit detailed misuse of purchasing cards, lax control over contracts, and a failure to send tuition bills to students.

A previous audit of the finances at the 7,000-student university revealed only 13 issues.

In a prepared statement Monday, the chairman of the Senate Higher Education Committee said it is appropriate for lawmakers to ensure the problems uncovered by the audit are addressed.

After release of the audit, President Wayne Watson said the university is working around the clock in solving the problem.
