In five years, an Illinois agency that disciplines nursing home administrators has received more than 400 complaints from the state agency that investigates nursing home care. Only three led to discipline. Advocates for nursing home residents say that’s a sign of a broken system. Wendy Meltzer of Illinois Citizens for Better Care says the two agencies need to work more closely so nursing home administrators are held accountable. Dan Bluthardt heads the state’s Division of Professional Regulation and makes decisions on administrator discipline. He says many of the complaints can’t be tied directly to administrators’ legal duties. The matter is under study by a task force that hopes to make recommendations to Gov. Pat Quinn by the end of January on nursing home safety. Copyright 2009 The Associated Press.
